Carnival period in Cyprus is famous for its costume parties and parades, as well as other public celebrations. The main attractions are the entrance of King Carnival, the Children's Carnival Parade and the Serenaders' Parade, although many more events and parties take place. In fact, all towns in Cyprus are festively decorated and host a plethora of fun festivities during this period. The culmination of carnival is represented by the Grand Carnival Parade, which takes place in most towns. The carnival custom originated in ancient Greece and was held in honor of Dionysos – the God of grape harvest and wine making. Ancient Greeks got dressed in various costumes, carried out performances and contests and held long lasting feasts with many seasonal and fresh specialties.

Green Monday also knows as Clean Monday marks the end of Carnival merriment and is also the first day of Lent, which is a National holiday in Cyprus. The day is known for its custom of outdoor gathering for picnics with a spread of customary fasting dishes and all family members participating in flying a kite.
