Interview with Mr. Savvas Vergas, The Mayor of Pafos.

Pafilia Sales Director Simos Simillides (right), recently interviewed the Mayor of Pafos (left), for an update on what’s happening in and around Pafos! Here’s what Mr. Vergas had to say:

What is your outlook for tourism in 2013?
During 2012 approximately, two and a half million tourists visited the island of Cyprus, 33% of which visited Pafos. We anticipate a similar volume for 2013, although expect an increase in the number of visitors from Nordic countries, Russia, the Middle East and Asia. In fact, we have received very encouraging signs from these markets.

What current capital projects are in the pipeline?
Pafos has some major projects underway. The construction of The Tombs of the Kings Avenue, the new Municipal Theatre and the regeneration of the Town’s Centre (Kennedy Square), are some of the current projects that will be completed in the coming years. These projects will help Pafos to evolve and grow in many ways, such as urban development, infrastructure and culture.

What does winning the title ‘Capital of Culture 2017’ mean to Pafos?
By winning the title of European Capital of Culture 2017, Pafos has a chance to rebirth, for the benefit of both the present and future generations. By making the most of this institution, Pafos can turn over a new leaf, enter a new era and reap the benefits throughout all sectors. Our city, like every city which receives the title, becomes the centre of European cultural creative activity. With that in mind, the advantages are many and of great importance. Some of the key benefits can be found below:
- The title will strengthen Pafos’ image as a historic town which was inspired by its rich past to build a bright future.
- It will improve the city’s economy through its international recognition as a high quality cultural and tourist destination.
- It will lead to the creation of new jobs.
- It will lead to the development of cultural and other infrastructure.
- It will enhance the city’s aesthetics and initiate the search for solutions and improvements.
- It will bring the city closer to its citizens, and the citizens closer to the city.
- It will create a new European identity that will help revitalise the city and strengthen its international presence.
- It will restore the links between different cultural and ethnic groups living in its periphery.
- It will become a bridge of communication and cultural cooperation linking Europe to the wider Eastern Mediterranean.
- It will receive and offer experiences, actively contributing to the development of European civilization.
It is very obvious that, the title of ECoC 2017 is a very important quest for Pafos, which all Pafians should work for comprehensively and collectively.

What interesting events will take place in Pafos in the coming months?
During the next months, there are several events which a visitor in Pafos can enjoy and indulge himself/herself. The Kataklysmos Festival, the World Music Day Festivities, the Pancyprian Choir Festival, the Cultural Window Festival, Musical Sundays, the International Ancient Greek Drama Festival, that take place during summer months and last but most important, the Opera of Pafos Aphrodite Festival Cyprus, that takes place every year in September, in front of the Medieval Castle, at Pafos Harbour.

As the Mayor of Pafos, I would like to thank you for the opportunity you have given me to talk about my city and of course, I would like to invite everyone to visit and enjoy Pafos!
